Disciples

The year is 1974 and the song tops Billboard Hot 100 songs. Ironically it will be Harry Chapin’s only #1 song in his entire musical career. Cats in the Cradle is a sad song about a Father not taking the time to spend with his newborn son. Yet as the boy grows, he continues the mantra of adoration  “I am gonna be like you Dad, you know I am going to be like you.”As the song continues it is clear that the boy (now a man) had sadly grown up to be just like his Dad.

In an odd way that is what a disciple is. Not just a learner but an adherent. Adherent to a teaching that becomes a lifestyle. While it is our sincere desire NOT to grow relationships mirrored in the song, we do want to mirror what Jesus taught.

Do as I say….Do as I do

It is the opening of the greatest sermon ever preached where we see the Greek word for disciple mathetes . How fitting it is that we see the taught at the feet of the Teacher, hearing for the first time a new way of life…Kingdom life. The Sermon on the Mount is by far the firmest foundation for any disciple of Christ. While the modern church quotes only a few passages in an adolescent way to proof-text an argument, the early church embraced it literally and used it liturgically daily.

Let me ask you a question. What was the last sermon you heard that made an indelible impression upon you? Were those words instructive, intuitive or down right insulting? Did it make you stop and think? Did you stand and trot over your minds’ threshold into your thoughts? These were exactly the reaction that many had there that day. They were amazed at His teaching for they sensed the authority. An authority that was not as they had grown accustom. The people viewed them one way and the Scribes and Pharisees another.

Memorize 2 Scriptures

John 3.16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.

1 John 3.16

We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters.

Obey 2 Commandments

And He said to him, “‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’

This is the great and foremost commandment

The second is like it,

‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ Upon these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 22:37-40

Learn 2 Laws

Law of Love

Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the Law. Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the Law.

Romans 12:8-10

Law of Liberty

So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty.

James 2:12
